ENDOMETRIOSIS
Endometriosis is a common under diagnosed, under treated and painful gynecological condition. It affects 10 per cent of females from puberty to menopause. The most common symptom is very painful periods which occur in 30 per cent of cases and surprisingly 20 per cent of women experience no symptoms at all.
The reason that so many women grow aberrant uterine tissue inside their fallopian tubes and their peritoneal cavity is not understood. The deposits respond to female sex hormones by growing, bleeding and sloughing in time with the menstrual cycle. Adhesions and dense scarring result, which then interfere with the bowel function and the fallopian tubes. Endometriosis is therefore a significant cause of infertility.
A variety of hormonal and surgical approaches are used in the treatment of endometriosis. Danazol is effective as well as high doses of progesterone. Doctors also prescribe fixed doses of the oral contraceptive for six to eight cycles in a row. This method is an effective means of avoiding the whole issue of painful periods all together.
Home Remedies
Any female whose normal activities are significantly disturbed by painful periods and not relieved by Ponstan or Naprogesic is at high risk of endometriosis. She should seek an early medical opinion.
