EGGS; FERTILITY PUMP
Ovulation actually begins in the woman’s brain, where the hypothalamus releases chemicals that stimulate the pituitary gland. In turn, the pituitary, just under the brain, releases hormones (chemical messengers) that trigger the ovaries to make and release eggs.
No Eggs, No Babies
It’s called anovulation. And there are many reasons that a woman produces no eggs. Mostly, it’s because her hormones are out of balance. This can be caused by malnourishment, certain medications, emotional stress, infections, or chronic illness.
When the pituitary fails to release enough ovary-stimulating hormones, doctors usually prescribe “fertility drugs,” such as Clomid and Pergonal, to provoke egg production. The drugs work nine times out of ten, but Pergonal treatment sometimes results in several eggs, causing the birth of triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets, and even sextuplets!
The Fertility Pump
Some women’s brains do not make enough pituitary-stimulating hormone. Doctors have attached an experimental fertility pump to women. Through a catheter inserted into a vein, the pump injects a synthetic form of the hormone around the clock. Ovulation has returned to 80 to 90 percent of the women, and several pregnancies have been reported.
